It's too bad...

It's too bad.... they aren't expressive.

We've really been targeting emotions and talking about feelings lately. Partly as a developmentally appropriate teaching opportunity... partly to help improve coping skills. The conversations contain a lot of "Use your words" and "You look (insert emotion here)" and "Let's think of a solution" and "When (insert frustrating situation here) happens to me, I would feel (insert emotion here) also". It's the whole acknowledge-relate-comfort-support process.

Today, while trying out bikes at Sunflower Bike Shop downtown, Abby was cruising around the shop on a bike and, when she went to park it, the damn thing toppled over. Now, I guarantee you that two weeks ago, Abby would have gone to pieces. She might have cried. She might have yelled. It just might have been a very unfavorable scene. Today? While still under the bike, she loudly, clearly, expressively stated: "I AM NOT HAPPY ABOUT WHAT JUST HAPPENED". While holding back laughter, I reaffirmed her feelings ("You're right, Abby. I wouldn't be happy either if my bike had fallen over") and we smiled (along with the staff at the store).

On an entirely different note, at dinner tonight, Elise announced that she was making a picture for Uncle Travis because he "probably doesn't get that many pictures". :) She was tracing her hand and wrist, drawing on a bracelet, and coloring the fingernails KU colors. Uncle T informed her that a monster would be nice, too. After a few more minutes, Elise held her picture up to me:

Elise: "Look, Momma. I drew a monster for Uncle Travis. It's green because it has the schwamp all over it". (say schwamp out-loud, please. it needs to be spoken for the full effect)
Me: "It's lovely! But what is all over it?"
Elise: "The schwamp." (stated very matter-of-factly)
Me: holding back laughter because of how awesome this child's /s/ sounds are: "Of course! The SWAMP! I love your swamp monster!"

Happy Sunday. I hope your day was full of freely spoken feelings and the schwamp. Both made me happy. Very, very happy.

Latest food conquered: Asparagus

In a previous post, I shared our broccoli success... and this week asparagus simply reinforced my beliefs about eating habits/preferences in children. When it's in-season, John and I eat a lot of asparagus. Grilled, sauteed, drizzled with balsamic vinegar, tossed into pasta - it makes regular appearances. Abby and Elise have been present for those appearances time and time again and, without pressure, have been required to take at least one bite. Before this week, the bite was had and, when asked if they'd like another, "no thank you" was quickly answered.

At dinner on Monday night, they both cleaned their plates - I made a simple chicken and asparagus stir-fry and served it over brown rice. Each green piece disappeared and asparagus-filled bellies were excused from the table.

My belief: "picky eaters" are not born; they are created. Children have taste preferences and favorite foods. But is a child's refusal to eat certain foods a true expression of dislike? Or is it a powerful tool allows them, at their next meal, to avoid encountering that dreaded asparagus again?

Chicken and Asparagus with Brown Rice

  • Local, free range chicken breasts
  • Organic asparagus
  • Organic garlic
  • Organic short-grain brown rice
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Salt and pepper
    • Cook brown rice: 1 C. uncooked rice, 2 C water, 1 T organic unsalted butter; boil water/butter; add rice; simmer until done (approx. 30 minutes)
    • Slice chicken into 1-2 inch pieces; cook over medium heat until almost done
    • Salt and pepper the chicken
    • Add asparagus, chopped into 1-inch pieces, and drizzle with olive oil
    • Saute for a few minutes; add 2-3 pressed garlic cloves
    • Drizzle with balsamic vinegar
    • Serve over brown rice
It's too bad that there isn't any love between them...

It's too bad...

they don't say funny/cute/priceless/heartwarming things...

  • Elise to Abby, as she embraces her in a hug: "My Abby..."
  • Abby to me, as we're snuggling after naps: "I love you..." to which I replied "I love you too, Abby", to which she replied "No, not Momma, ducky."
  • Elise to no one in particular: "By jove, I got it."
  • Abby to me in the car, talking about a book-on-tape we had just turned off: "Momma, I don't like The Three Billy Goats Gruff either."
  • Elise to me, after lighting the menorah: "Momma, something you have? Teeny present?"
  • Abby at the dinner table, talking about a good friend's husband: "Me see Jamey bald head?"
  • Elise to me, every time we pull into my parent's driveway: "My Grandpa..."
  • Abby: "I say Hanu-puh" (Hanukkah)
  • Elise: "I say Honka-puh" (Hanukkah)
  • Abby, requesting a bite of my breakfast: "Momma, I love 'dis cereal"
  • Elise, talking about a good friend's little girl: "Momma, Jovea like fried beans (refried beans)?"
  • Abby, while looking out the window and seeing neighbor Bob's Christmas lights: "Good job, Bob!"

Happy Friday!

It's too bad...

they don't love each other...

Current favorite quotes:
  • Elise: After being reminded frequently that we just don't drink out of other people's cups, as I was returning Cohen's cup to his daddy, Elise says "Momma, Coco milk... me drink.". I said "You drank Cohen's milk?" and Elise responded "Yeah! Two times!". Honest little stinker...
  • Abby's "ABCs"! She dances around the room, bouncing up and down on her toes, arms alternating up and down, to the tune of (and at the top of her lungs): "A, B, C, G, H, W, X, Y, Z! Now my ACs... Next time, sing me!". If at any point Elise chimes in, Abby declares "NO! Mine!", as she is quite proud of her alphabet performance.
  • "Duh, doo" is finally transforming into "Thank you". Whew! It's about time!
  • "Bless you" - both A and E say "bless you" when someone sneezes.
  • And finally, shopping. The girls make multiple pretend trips each day to either The Merc or HyVee, pushing their strollers down the hall to buy "sugar", "blueberry scone", "peach scone", or today it was "new soap".
When asked what they wanted for breakfast this morning, both replied "PANCAKES!". No, I'm not considering changing the name of the blog to "pancakes", but I did kind of miss our daily request for "bananas and blueberries".
