Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #31: Workspace

Here it is folks. The infamous "workroom" behind the door that is typically closed when we have company. This houses my card-making supplies... my sewing supplies... my Baby Sing and Sign supplies... my computer. It may look like a total disaster, but the contents of this room make me happy. At any given moment, I can walk in here and make something. Create. Experiment. The paper, the fabric, the yarn, the materials - it may look all out of place, but really every bit of it has a place in my world.

And in the workroom, things like this also happen. Best creation ever, those two.

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #30: Friendship

"What would you think if I sang out of tune
Would you stand up and walk out on me?
Lend me your ear and I'll sing you a song
And I'll try not to sing out of key.
Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mmm, I get high with a little help from my friends
Mmm, gonna try with a little help from my friends."
- The Beatles

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #29: Perspective

It's the little things in life that matter. Without a doubt. There is my perspective, my mental view. My wee front-yard garden? Growing, blooming, beautiful. I love to look at it. I love the flowers in the bathroom everyday from it. It makes me happy. And at the end of the day, isn't it nice to feel happy?

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #28: New

I served my children chocolate for breakfast. That is definitely NEW. For some very odd reason, I got this itch to make chocolate muffins. Even John woke up and said "Chocolate? You made chocolate muffins?". Now, let me Erin-ize this situation by noting that they were chocolate zucchini muffins. Ahhhh.... veggie cancels out chocolate. Sweet.

Chocolate Zucchini Muffins

  • 1/2 C oat flour
  • 1/2 C organic, unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp Himalayan pink salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 C organic coconut sugar
  • 2 T organic unsalted butter; melted

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #27: Black and White

Our Saturday started bright and early and CHILLY this morning - the Merc hosted their second annual 5K, a fundraiser for the incredible school gardens that are happening here in Lawrence. It is so exciting to live somewhere that local, homegrown food is being embraced and treated as a priority in education. Last year, my Dad and I loaded up the double stroller and walked; this year I borrowed a single stroller and ran. Abby wanted to keep me company while Elise, Gran, and Grandpa waited for us at the end. I run for health, I run because it's good for my mental well being, I run because it sets a good example for the girls - I don't run to race. But I can't lie - it felt like a win to be the first stroller out of a bunch to cross the finish line!

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #26: Everyday

My one kitchen appliance that gets used. Everyday. I'm not kidding! My blender sees more action than... the oven. Jeeze. Where were you going with that one????

Back to the blender, now that you've removed your head from the gutter... Today it whipped up smoothies for breakfast and hummus for lunch, snacks, and dinner. I'm obsessed with the hummus recipe from my friend Jill (THANK YOU!). I've tried making it a number of times and never loved it... until now. And, it comes as no surprise, that this recipe is from none other than the amazing Cooks Illustrated. Blend some up, serve it with a drizzle of olive oil and fresh lemon juice, a splash of sriracha, and a fresh cucumber from Gran and Grandpa's garden. Thank you, blendy-blender.

Hummus

  • 3 T fresh organic lemon juice
  • 1/4 C water
  • 6 T organic tahini
  • 2 T organic olive oil
  • 1 can organic chickpeas (rinsed)
  • 1 organic garlic clove - crushed in garlic press
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • Pinch of cumin
  • Pinch of cayenne
    • Combine lemon juice and water
    • Combine tahini and olive oil
    • Blend chickpeas, crushed garlic, salt, cumin, cayenne
    • Add lemon juice/water as needed to get the chickpeas blending; once those are going, add rest of lemon juice/water
    • Add tahini/oil

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #25: Ground

Our 7th Anniversary was yesterday, July 24th. Seven years ago we were on a beach in Maui, getting hitched by a large Samoan man playing a ukulele. At that time, I didn't drink coffee. I liked "mocha" things - in high school, my dad and I frequently made after-dinner runs to Baskin Robbins for a cappuccino blast. Anyone remember those? My mom and I miss the jamoca almond fudge ice cream from there as well. Both coffee-inspired, but nothing at all like a cup of coffee. This picture of freshly ground beans, soaking in hot water in our pour-over coffee pot, represents John's ever-present influence in who I am today, one cup of coffee at a time. I'm not a daily coffee drinker and I always add milk, but I'll go without any sweetener or maybe a drizzle of honey or maple syrup. He's a good influence and I love my daily reminders of how "we" have changed "me". Happy anniversary (a day late) to my coffee-drinking partner. Thank you for keeping me grounded. Forever.

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #24: D is for...

Dollhouse. The one on the left belonged to me during my younger years... My Grandpa built it for me. And it must have been made with lots of love to have held together so well! Much like our fairy gardens, the world that exists in the dollhouses is magical and I love watching the girls play here - sometimes together, sometimes alone. Today the Bear family is residing in the house on the left; next door are their neighbors the Hedgehogs. And while you might think the rooftops and windows are adorned with necklaces and mardi gras leftovers, those are actually Christmas lights twinkling away.

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #23: I drew this...

It's not a fancy drawing, by any means, but my "Thank You" sign sure did make for some lovely birthday thank you cards! The girls smiled pretty for pictures and while I assembled the front (with the pic), they wrote notes on the back of each and every one. It's so lovely when crossing something off of the "to do" list gives such a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment.

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #22: Grey

Grey's Anatomy - TV show that first aired in 2005. I just started watching it on Netflix. That only puts me 8 years behind, which is better than the 10 years that I typically average. So we don't have cable... not a single channel. We have one TV in our house - in the basement. And from sun-up to sun-down, nearly 7 days a week, it doesn't even get turned on. I don't keep up to speed with anything current: movies, music, fashion... sadly sometimes not even the news. This is where Netflix makes lowly earth-lovers like me feel like we're hip. Because really - is the Grey's Anatomy of 2005 any different from the.... uhhhh..... hmmmm.... I can't even name a comparable show from 2013. Point proven.

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #21: Fave Food

It is amazingly appropriate that the challenge keyword "fave food" coincided with John's birthday. I'm sorry I didn't bake you a cake, dear, but I feel confident that the pancakes and bacon that I made for your birthday breakfast were an obvious indication of my love for you. I'm sorry that this morning at the Merc while the girls were telling the cashier it was your birthday, they also told her you were 40. Totally my fault and I corrected the mistake immediately. After I giggled. But even when you are 40, I'll still shower you with pancakes for your birthday. Happy Birthday and we love you!

Happy Birthday, Daddy!
From Elise:

"Happy birthday to you,
I love you because,
You're sooooo schweet...
Because you look like a banana!"

May 2009, Elise
From Abby:

"Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
You are so schweet...
Happy birthday to you, I love more than anyone!"

December 2009, Abby

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #20: Hot

Post-run with the puppy. I feel very proud that I ran Charlie-girl hard enough that she's actually panting. In her 2 short weeks of being a runner, she kills me every time. That overgrown wiener dog on stilts Vizsla sure can run!

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #19: Building

The Merc. The reason we love grocery shopping. Local. Great food. Awesome people. It's grocery shopping and social hour for all of us, every. single. time.

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #18: Number

Number 12... 12 books recorded on the library's summer reading challenge. 12 books read independently. 12 books written down independently (with a word or two squeezed in by Momma because the lines just weren't long enough or spaced far enough apart). These 12 books do not begin to represent the gobs of books read by the girls, but it is so exciting to see. We've done this at the library every summer - but this is the first summer that the girls could do it on their own. Proud, proud Mom.

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #17: Inspirational

I get inspired in the kitchen. This photo about says it all - blender in use... fresh ingredients... green mixing bowl... The inspiration here is homemade honey-sweetened lemonade and whole grain chocolate chip cookies, both requested by A and E for their teddy bear picnic that we are having tomorrow. They decided about a week ago that this event would take place - last weekend, invitations were made and handed out to their buddies. The invites said something like this: "It is on Friday. 10:00. From, Abby". Instructions were verbally given to friends to bring a stuffed animal with them. We've been to the library and checked out teddy bear books and my kitchen adventures today will complete the menu of: lemonade, chocolate chip cookies, cherries, and Annie's organic teddy grahams (which I convinced the girls to use instead of me also making vanilla cookies and a cake, which was the original plan by the 5-year olds). More planning is going into this than their birthday party, but when one is inspired, no one should stand in the way. The teddy bear picnic was Abby and Elise's inspiration - so it is my job to make it happen.

Honey-Sweetened Lemonade
courtesy of Seasonal Family
  • Juice of 6 large, organic lemons
  • 4 C hot water
  • 1/3 C plus 2 T local honey
  • 2 C room temperature water
    • Heat 4 C water in teapot
    • Combine hot water with honey
    • Add room temp water
    • Add fresh lemon juice

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day 16: Bottle

Cold, local, glass-bottled milk... Emergency stop at The Merc was required on the way home from dinner at FreeState this evening - remember how we don't DO birthday cakes??? John's bday is next in line and his folks came for dinner, dessert pie in hand: Peach Blueberry Pie. This is his birthday dessert of choice, and there are no complaints from the peanut gallery.

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #15: Outside My Window

I enjoy the view outside my kitchen window. Since the Plum massacre, it has become somewhat of a necessity. The chickens are often visible, brainlessly pecking around or cooling off in the birdbath. But I feel like a teacher on a field trip: head count... re-count ... one more time... making sure all are still present. Peep? Check. Pip? Check. Lavender? Check.

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #14: Edible

This is Abby's dinner - she helped put together a beautiful salad bar and then eagerly and proudly assembled her own salad. Truth: I helped her eat a lot of her lettuce; she ate her weight in everything else, especially cucumbers and olives. Fresh-from-the-garden good.

You know what else is edible? MY CHILDREN! They are cute, people. Really damn cute and sometimes I just want to nibble on them. Keep eating those salads, sweet potatoes, because whatever you're doing is working!

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #13: 4 o'clock

At 4:00 this afternoon, we were showered, jammied, and snuggled up watching Charlotte's Web. After a fun-filled four-hour swim-a-thon with friends, some quiet time was much needed. This particular version of Charlotte's Web is right up our alley - it has real people! We only watched about half... saving the rest for another day. On our trip to the lake a few weeks ago, we listened to this book on CD in the car - the girls LOVE listening to books as well as reading them and, as far as movies are concerned, something like this that follows a book is an awesome option. While I was fixing dinner, the girls had pulled out their own (new) copy of Charlotte's Web and had their noses buried in the print version of Wilbur's story.

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #12: A Bad Habit

Hello. My name is Erin and I'm a paperaholic. I cannot throw away paper. Specifically paper that my children have touched, be it a masterpiece or a smear. I try to put them in the trash, but I swear the little people on the pages start crying and questioning my love for my children. So I take them out, smooth the wrinkles, and place them with the others. Lots, and lots of others.

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #11: I Wore This

I wore plastic bags... on my hands... to dispose of our dead chicken. Farewell, Plum. You were a good chicken. I'm sorry the neighbor's dachshund thought you were dinner. Elise thinks maybe you ate poison ivy because I didn't tell her exactly how you died. We'll miss your rooster-ish ways.

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #9: 3 things

Three trees now adorn our bedroom wall. Thank you, Lana, for the company, the painting expertise, and the bargain shopping. It was a great day!

Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day #8: Path

My running path has a new companion... Happy 1st Birthday, Charlie! I've been waiting for you to turn a year old since the day we brought you home - every run is better with my dog.

Happy FIFTH Birthday, Baby Girls!

Last night, John said "Babe, can you believe that five years ago you were hooked up to a bunch of machines and feeling rotten?"... to which I replied "I do. And I remember spending half the night stressing about what we would name one or both of our babies if we had a boy." We didn't have a boy - we had two tiny baby girls who have spent the last five years challenging us as individuals and as a couple. And on this fifth birthday, all I can say is "thank you". Thank you, Abby and Elise. You have taught us more about ourselves... about priorities... about being selfless and selfish... about exhaustion... about elation... about determination... about pride... about life... about love. I love you more today than I did yesterday.

Abby Rose - You are my gauge, my meter for how our family is doing emotionally. You wear your feelings on your sleeve and when life feels stressful, it shows in your body language, in your words, in your sleep patterns. When life is carefree and peaceful, it shows in your smile, your laughter, and your step. Last year I wrote how much you love babies - that has not changed one bit. Friends with babies can tell you apart from Elise because of the speed with which you run to their little one to touch, squeeze, and hold. Animals have the same effect on you - I think you're often more excited to see Charlie pup in the morning than me. You have a new interest in the kitchen - and not just eating. When I'm cooking, baking, chopping, stirring - "Momma, may I help you please?". You are the cutest assistant ever. Your independence cannot be rivaled but your need for comfort, closeness, and my touch has not lessened. On solid ground, you have no fear - you took off on your bike confidently and with ease. You are often scaling any tree, wall, counter, bag of feed at the farm store that can be found. You have spent countless hours in a purple, velour leotard with a skirt around it. And maybe an apron. And possibly knee-high black boots. And your hair is always down, unless I demand otherwise. You, like your Uncle Travis, love seafood. For your birthday lunch, we had noodles with shrimp at Little Saigon - your choice. You have learned how to wink.

Elise Autumn - Patience. If I could think of a word right now that describes you, it is patience. Best example? When we are getting ready to go somewhere, you always want your hair brushed. You will say "Momma, will you brush my hair?" to which I often reply "In just a minute.". This same exchange may happen zero more times or sixteen more times. Each interaction is as polite and patient as the last. It is rare that you leave the house without a headband or barrette. Last summer, you took your first class where I dropped you off and left - it was traumatic for both of us. This summer, I dropped you and Abby off at the Arts Center for a two hour class one week. You hugged me, kissed me, and marched through the door to make some new friends. I had kleenex in my pocket but never told you. Last year I wrote about how you freak out with bugs - just yesterday, you went and got a kleenex, headed to the living room window, smashed and disposed of a fly. That, my dear child, is growth! In the water, you have no fear - at the lake, you jumped right off the boat and enthusiastically volunteered to go tubing. In the pool, you are underwater doing somersaults and handstands more than you're above water. You love to write - I was still laying in bed the other morning and, from across the hall, you asked me how to spell "apparently". You love "open noodles", the multi-colored shells from The Merc. For your birthday breakfast, we had scones at The Merc - your choice.  You have learned how to snap.

Abby and Elise - over the past year, you have learned how to read and ride a bike. You took a dance class and started piano lessons. We've finished the chapter books Mary Poppins, Stuart Little, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, and Charlotte's Web, to name a few. Today, you received 6 new chapter books as birthday presents, and you've been reading all. day. long. You know who the president is and that he lives in Washington, DC. You were also heartbroken when you found out that his trip to Lawrence had been canceled. You have both learned how to play Twinkle, Twinkle, and Mary Had a Little Lamb on the piano. When one of you is upset, the other one's latest trick is to run to her side and cross your eyes and stick out your tongue. This leads to a fit of giggles, which is amazing. You are both so aware of other children and eager to introduce yourself. You never forget a name. Every Monday morning, we do our weekly shopping together at the Merc. While I'm checking out, you two are over chatting with the ladies who work at the credit union - you know their names and when they're out sick, and I have no doubt that they know a heck of a lot about our life. This year, we start the adventure of school together. I've asked you both, multiple times and individually, if you want to go to school. Both of you reply, every time, "No, Momma, I want to stay home with you." Your wish is my command. Thank you for choosing me to be your first teacher - I know we'll have our ups and downs, but I will do my best to work with you, support you, and love you. More today than I did yesterday. Happy Birthday Abby and Elise!
